The Pipes...
My pipes are handmade in the USA, using only the highest quality plateaux briar available. I use a lathe to bore the briar slightly undersize and rough shape the stummel by hand.
Once bored and roughed out, the briar undergoes a lengthy oil curing/drying process. When the process is complete the final boring is done by hand and the interior of the stummel is cleaned up.
It is then married to an ebonite stem via a delrin® tennon. I use a lathe for various machining operations on the interior of the stem, and the exterior is shaped by hand. The inside of the stem is opened up and polished to allow full air flow.
Next the careful, protracted task of final hand shaping begins. When the refining is complete, the entire pipe is sanded starting with 80 grit sandpaper and systematically brought through the grits down to 1000 grit. Depending on the pipe, staining may begin and continue throughout the sanding process.
Finally the pipe gets polished. This begins with a fairly course tripoli buffing compound and ends with a proprietary blend of natural waxes, oil and finish which I have developed over time. This thin layer of natural finish is all that comes between your hand and the briar.
At last, each pipe receives its nomenclature. The familiar Old Nellie Pipes is stamped into the briar, followed by USA and then the identity designation.
It is my sincere hope that you will enjoy smoking one of my truly handmade Old Nellie Pipes.
